How do I become a Christian?

First, it’s important to realize that of ourselves, we can do nothing. But, as Paul said in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

According to Acts 11:26, the followers of Jesus were first called Christians at Antioch. They were called Christians because they followed Christ and had committed to walk as Jesus walked (see 1 John 2:6).

In Ephesians 2:8-9, we read “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Secondly, we must confess our sins to God, and to accept the forgiveness that He offers. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Finally, you make it known by Baptism. Baptism is a symbol of our union with Christ, the forgiveness of our sins, and our reception of the Holy Spirit. It is by immersion in water and is contingent on an affirmation of faith in Jesus and evidence of repentance of sin. It follows instruction in the Holy Scriptures and acceptance of their teachings. (Matt. 28:19, 20; Acts 2:38; 16:30-33; 22:16; Rom. 6:1-6; Gal. 3:27; Col. 2:12, 13.)
